Matter 6 of 2018 - ADF Rotary Wing Aviation Inspection 3 - 5 July 2018

The Tribunal conducted an inspection in relation to Matter 6 of 2018 - ADF Rotary Wing Aviation from 3 - 5 July 2018 in Queensland.

The inspection demonstrated the rotary wing capability for Army and Navy and the aviation officer integration with various combat elements, including a joint operational environment and over water Naval aviation operations. The inspection also provided an opportunity for the Tribunal to meet aviation officers, particularly those in Troop, Squadron and Unit command positions.  This aided the Tribunal in awareness of the workforce structures and changes proposed by Army.

The Tribunal visited the Army Aviation Training Centre, Swartz Barracks, Oakey where they witnessed and were engaged in, air assault mission planning processes and simulation training. Briefings were also conducted in relation to Army Aviation capabilities and organisational structure.

At 16 Aviation Brigade and 5th Aviation Regiment in Townsville the Tribunal met with key personnel within the Regiment including Squadron and maintenance personnel as well as witnessing detailed operational mission breifings and aircraft static displays.

While the inspection was located at Army units it also included elements of Naval aviation deployed from 808 and 816 Squadrons, HMAS Albatross, Nowra. Briefings were conducted in relation to Navy capability, with specific reference to the structural fragility of the aviation workforce.
